There are few people more popular in Manchester right now than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
After Manchester United’s disappointing loss to Paris Saint-Germain last Tuesday, the first question marks about interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came to the surface.
The Norwegian coach has been doubted by some from the start, but the defeat at Old Trafford was the first time during his tenure that his team was truly outplayed.
After a 2-0 victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup on Monday evening, those doubts were consigned to history, as United found the perfect formula to nullify their hosts and exploit their many weaknesses.
It was perhaps the most impressive display of tactical nous displayed since Solskjaer took over, and the former United player was in good form while speaking to Gary Lineker post-match.
After wading through the usual post-match chat and insisting that the focus was on the next game which, in truth, is a very important fixture against Liverpool, Solskjaer discussed what it would mean to lift the FA Cup with United as manager.
He also used the opportunity to slip in a wonderful little dig at pundit Alan Shearer, capping off what he’ll no doubt view as a night of complete success.
“The FA Cup is one of the best trophies you can win. I played in 1999… Alan, I think you played?” joked Solskjaer, to sounds of immense laughter from the studio, prompting Shearer to thank him and say “I was having a good night until then”.
