John O’Shea is on the move
With his contract due to expire with Sunderland at the end of the month, it’s now been confirmed that the veteran defender will join Reading in time for next summer.
O’Shea, now 37, has signed a one-year deal with the Royals after his seven-year stint at the Stadium of Light came to an end.
“John has played and won at the very highest level,” Reading’s manager Paul Clement said.
“He will bring us fantastic levels of experience and proven leadership qualities. We look forward to him being a big contributor on the pitch next season.”
O’Shea was a product of Manchester United’s youth system and went on to make over 250 appearances for the club. Amongst other titles, he played his part in five of the club’s Premier League title successes.
In search of regular first team football, he left for Sunderland in 2011. The club were relegated from the Premier League in 2017 and O’Shea was unable to prevent them slipping into the third tier of English football last season, finishing bottom of the Championship.
News of his move to Reading comes just days after O’Shea bowed out of international football during Ireland’s 2-1 friendly victory over the United States in Dublin.
