Paul Merson says dumb stuff and everyone either laughs, cries or gets infuriated.
Listen, no one tunes in to Paul Merson to hear pearls of wisdom. Sky Sports viewers don’t expect to be educated by the former Arsenal man. Providing analysis has never been his strong suit, but what he is excellent at is entertaining.
If this was ye olden times, the likes of Gary Neville would be in the war room, breaking down the tactics of battles. While Merse would be the jester donning the dunce’s cap and dancing a merry jig while the villagers hurl rotten fruit and vegetables at him guffawing at their only source of joy.
That may seem like a harsh analogy, but it isn’t meant as one. He brought it on himself this time with one silly bet.

Sure enough, Huddersfield avoided the drop. Drawing 1-1 with Chelsea on Wednesday sealed their position in the English top flight for another season.
So on Friday, Merson held up his end of the bargain. He made a bet and was man enough to pay the piper when it didn’t come off. He wore the Gonzo costume in the studio and as you’ve probably already guessed, it was absolutely horrifying.
