Let’s hope it was just a slip of the tongue.
Surely Phil Neville is aware of the fact that Uruguay have won the World Cup on two occasions, right?
In 1930 and 1950, Uruguay were world champions but that seemed to slip Neville’s mind during his commentary on Wednesday afternoon.
A Luis Suarez goal against Saudi Arabia was enough to give Uruguay their second victory in Group A of the World Cup, meaning that they have guaranteed a place in the knockout stages of the competition, along with hosts Russia.
Neville was on commentary duty for the BBC but one comment from the former Manchester United and Everton full-back left viewers scratching their heads.
“The fans were telling us before the game they’re not bothered how they play, what kind of style or system they play, all they’re bothered about is winning and progressing through further than what they’ve ever done before,” Neville said.
How a team could possibly progress further than being champions is beyond us and supporters didn’t hesitate to remind Neville of his slip-up, with some suggesting that he perhaps half-arsed his homework ahead of the game.
It’s safe to say that he’ll be Googling the list of previous World Cup winners before his next trip to the gantry.

So Phil Neville thinks the fans of 2-time World Cup winners Uruguay are hoping to progress further than they ever have before…

“Their fans told us they’re not bothered how they win they just wanna progress further than they ever have before”
Phil Neville obviously believes you can progress further than being World champions like Uruguay have been twice before!

Can someone please tell Phil Neville that for Uruguay to “progress further than they’ve ever done” would be pretty difficult since they’ve won the World Cup more times than England have 🤦🏼♂️

Can Phil Neville explain how Uruguay want to progress further than they ever have done before? #WorldCup

Phil Neville saying Uruguay fans don't care how they play they just wanna progress and get further in the tournament than they've ever done before. Not possible Phil, they've won it twice. What a fucking idiot.

Not a great five mins from Phil Neville there
He claimed that Saudi Arabia might be the best team in the World Cup at keeping possession, then said that Uruguay fans just want their team to progress further than they have before. The same Uruguay who have twice won the #WorldCup

‘They want to progress further than they ever have before’ says Phil Neville about Uruguay 🇺🇾 the two time World Cup winners. How does that work 🤔

So… Phil Neville thinks that Saudi Arabia "keep the ball in the middle of the pitch better than anyone in the competition."
Eh, Spain?
Phil also suggests that "Uruguay don't care how they play, just that they progress farther than ever before."
They've won it twice, Phil.
