Several stars showed their support after Josh Cavallo came out as gay
Gerard Pique and Antoine Griezmann are among several stars to show their support to Josh Cavallo after he came out as gay on Wednesday.
The news is a historic moment in the LGBT+ sporting community and Cavallo released a statement hoping that his announcement would help inspire others to follow suit.
He said: “It’s been a journey to get to this point in my life, but I couldn’t be happier with my decision to come out.”
“I have been fighting my sexuality for six years now, and I am glad we can put that to rest.
“It is astonishing to know that there are currently no gay professional footballers who are out and actively playing.
“Not only in Australia, but around the world. Hopefully this will change in the near future.”
His club, Adelaide United, also posted a video to their social media platforms where he said: “There’s something personal that I need to share with everyone. I am a footballer and I am gay.
“All I want to do is play football and be treated equally.”
Cavallo’s announcement has sparked a wave of positive support for the midfielder’s decision to speak out and several players have praised his bravery on social media.
Barcelona defender Pique offered his support to reassure him that everybody supports his message.
He said: “Hey @JoshuaCavallo , I don’t have the pleasure to know you personally but I want to thank you for this step that you take. The world of football is far behind and you are helping us move forward.”
