Champions League nights under the lights weren’t always that common at St James’ Park
Newcastle United are back in the Champions League after a 20-year absence from Europe’s biggest competition.
There was a brief period where the Magpies were regular fixtures in the tournament however – most notably beating Barcelona 3-2 back in the 1997/98 campaign.
But, before the fairytale story of an owner with billions and billions of pounds came along to allow Eddie Howe to secure them a top four finish and go on to beat Paris Saint-Germain 4-0, they came up against Barça once again back in 2003.
Unfortunately for Newcastle, they weren’t quite able to replicate Faustino Asprilla’s incredible hat trick at St James’ Park as La Blaugrana secured the win thanks to Patrick Kluivert (who would later go on to play for the Geordies) and Thiago Motta.
Also in the Barcelona side that day? Xavi, their current manager.
But this isn’t about Barcelona, this is about the Magpies. More importantly, your ability to remember that starting XI that faced the Spanish side on March 19, 2003.
There’s some names which you should be able to get pretty easily but there will definitely be a few that you won’t get straight away at first but kick yourself once the name comes up.
All you can do is your best so without further a do, best of luck!
