Steven Gerrard isn’t wasting any time in overhauling the Rangers squad
Rangers yesterday announced the signing of Scott Arfield from Burnley as the first import of Steven Gerrard’s reign a Ibrox. Arfield will likely be one of many new arrivals this summer, with Gerrard reportedly planning a squad overhaul after Rangers finished the season 3rd, 12 points behind Celtic.
Gerrard’s next transfer target is former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, according to the Daily Record, who are reporting that Rangers have launched a £4m bid for the player. Skrtel currently plays in Turkey for Fenerbahçe, but could be tempted to return to the UK by the prospect of working with his former captain once again.
Gerrard and Skrtel spent nine years together at Liverpool and were part of the sides who came within a few points of winning league titles in 2009 and 2014, only to be beaten by Manchester United and then Manchester City five years later.
Skrtel never shies away from a physical battle, and is composed enough on the ball to perform well in the Scottish Premiership.
The 33-year-old also has international experience, having racked up 97 caps for Slovakia. He played a big part in holding England to a 0-0 draw in Euro 2016.
