Charlie Savage could make his professional debut for Manchester United against Young Boys
Robbie Savage ‘started to tear up’ after it was announced that his son Charlie had been named on the bench for Manchester United’s Champions League game against Young Boys.
With United already through to the knockout stages, interim manager Ralf Rangnick has named a heavily rotated side, featuring several academy graduates, including Charlie, who has been named amongst the substitutes.
His father, Robbie, a graduate of United’s academy in the early 1990s, was also at Old Trafford working for BT Sport as a co-commentator and admitted that hearing his son had made the first-team squad had made him emotional.

“I’m starting to tear up…” he said to Jake Humphrey.
“He’s achieved so much in his young life now.
“He’s never been top of the group, he’s always had to meet targets every two years when he was on the borderline and if he was going to be kept on.
“His application, his work ethic, his desire, he’s humble, that has got him to where he is.”
Savage then went on to say that he believes he has had to work harder than others in order to get the reward he deserves.

He said: I think at times, it’s been harder for him.
“As a father who’s been a footballer and is standing on the sideline, people automatically think Charlie’s going to be like his dad.
“He’s not like me, he’s his own player and I’m just absolutely delighted.”
Savage then revealed he had given his son some words of advice in the run-up to the game.
The co-commentator said: “Even if he doesn’t get on, I’ve told him, ‘whatever happens for the rest of your life, you’ve been on the bench for Manchester United’ – something I couldn’t do.
“He’s done it. It’s him that’s done it, not me.”
