Roman Abramovich once spent £40k to have favourite takeaway flown from London

Must’ve been good if he’s spending that much

We’ve all been in that situation when we’ve spent far too much on a takeaway we love, but I guarantee none of you have spent £40,000 on it.

If you have, then you’re just as crazy as outgoing Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who once spent that much just to sample his favourite takeaway.

The sanctioned oligarch had not long taken the reigns at Stamford Bridge, where he was sampling the delicacies from around the capital, with one taking the particular fancy of the now-outgoing Blues owner.

Abramovich spent over £40,000 to fly the takeaway

In fact, he liked it so much that he forked out the extortionate fee to have it flown all the way to his home in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Although now closed, Ubon – a Japanese restaurant formerly situated in Canary Wharf – was a huge hit with Abramovich, who requested for a delivery of sushi to his door some 2,500 miles away.

As reported by the Sunday Timesthe order for the food surpassed the £1,000 mark alone before forking out an extra £39,000 in order to fly it by private jet.

Given that the flight time alone is five-and-a-half hours, one can imagine the food didn’t arrive in the best condition. Also, as far as we’re aware, Deliveroo and Uber Eats don’t offer delivery by air travel.

Abramovich has been linked with purchasing two other clubs

Takeaways are likely the furthest thing from Abramovich’s mind currently, as he continues to try and find a new buyer for Chelsea after he was sanctioned by the UK government.

Reports have suggested that the oligarch is looking to find a new club to purchase, with Spanish club Valencia one of those targeted, as well as Turkish outfit Goztepe.
