He put in a huge performance
It was about time he put in a performance like this. Not performing in ‘big games’ has been the main criticism of Romelu Lukaku, not just this season but for the past few years. Today he went some way to reversing the popular opinion of him being a flat track bully by putting in a dominant performance against his old club with a goal and an assist to boot.
Chelsea took an early lead through Willian, who finished off a slick counter-attacking move with a powerful near post finish, but Lukaku equalised before half-time after some excellent short passing around Chelsea’s box.

United’s striker had been much more involved in general play he was in other matches against the ‘big six’ this season, partly because in this fixture, Mourinho’s side were not set up in a shape that isolated Lukaku, as they had done away at Anfield.
Lukaku contributed more than just a goal to this victory as he set up Jesse Lingard for the winning goal with a pinpoint cross. He didn’t slack off after that either; in the 92nd minute, he almost made it 3-1 as he charged up the pitch at full pelt, displaying the explosiveness he hasn’t always had the space to use.
This was a truly dominant performance from Lukaku against a top side, and it got a lot of fans talking. This is what United paid for when they brought the Belgian to Old Trafford.

Massive win for United and to be star of the show in a big game is just reward for Lukaku, who I think has looked great in recent weeks.

Important win for United that. Gap to Chelsea now six points. Important game for Lukaku too. Time he stepped up in a big match and he did that today #MUFC #CFC
