BREAKING: Wayne Rooney agrees ‘in principle’ to join DC United

Simon Lloyd

Wayne Rooney could be about to leave Everton for a second time.

The striker returned to his boyhood club last summer after spending 13 years at Manchester United.

However, after reports claimed Sam Allardyce would be unable to guarantee the 32-year-old a starting berth at the Toffees, it now appears a move to America is a very real possibility for Rooney.

Reports earlier in the week claimed Major League Soccer side DC United were cautiously optimistic of signing Rooney when their transfer window opens in July, with the suggestion that the player’s representatives had already been exploring the possibility of a move.

The BBC now claim that Rooney has agreed a deal in principle to join the Washington-based side this summer. However, they also add that nothing has been signed yet, meaning it’s still possible Rooney could prolong his second spell at Everton, the club at which he began his career.

DC United are said to have been looking to bring in a high profile signing this summer, similar to the kind of deals which have seen Rooney’s former Manchester United teammates Bastian Schweinsteiger and Zlatan Ibrahimovic move to Chicago Fire and Los Angeles Galaxy respectively. As well as Rooney, they are also said to have looked at Javier Hernandez and Carlos Tevez – two more of his former teammates at Old Trafford – as well as ex Manchester City and Liverpool striker, Mario Balotelli.
