And the award for the most considerate football fans ever goes to…

Given the circumstances, few would have blamed Senegal’s fans for getting a little bit carried away on Tuesday afternoon. Appearing in just their second ever World Cup, their first since 2002, the African nation defeated Poland 2-1 in Moscow’s Spartak Stadium.

Thiago Cionek’s own goal gave them a half-time lead in the Russian capital, with M’Baye Niang adding a second after an hour. Grzegorz Krychowiak pulled one back with four minutes of regulation time remaining, setting up a nervy finish.

Senegal held on, with their fans understandably delighted at the full-time whistle. However, instead of continuing their celebrations outside the stadium, some of their supporters were seen tidying up after themselves before heading for the exit doors.

Footage of some of the Senegalese supporters gathering empty bottles and other items of litter and piling them in one of the rows of stadium seating was shared on social media after the game. The video, just over a minute in duration, has been widely shared in the time since.
