The move could suit all parties

Another City legend could be on his way out

Some transfer rumours just don’t go away. Some remain part of the news cycle long after the player’s retirement. Somewhere, Wesley Sneijder is probably being linked to Manchester United. Nico Gaitan, to my knowledge, might not be a real person, yet he will still be linked with a move to Old Trafford every single summer.

A more recent edition of this phenomenon comes in the form of Antoine Griezmann constantly being on the verge of moving to Barcelona. The Atlético Madrid striker has been their talisman for a few seasons now. Since Diego Costa left for Chelsea in 2014, Griezmann has led the line and stepped up in big moments to secure countless 1-0 wins. Costa has since returned to Atletico but it seems like the pair may only enjoy one season together, with the ‘Griezou’ likely to push for a move to Barcelona in the summer.

The move could have gone through last summer, but Griezmann reportedly stayed put out of a sense of duty given Atlético’s transfer ban. The move could depend on one factor though: Atléti bringing in a replacement for Griezmann in the form of Sergio Agüero, who also played for Atlético before his move to Manchester City in 2011. MARCA report that the club have made contact with Agüero, who has reportedly not dismissed the possibility of rejoining his old team.

Agüero has been prolific for City ever since he joined and continued his good form under Pep Guardiola, but he seems to be just past his best, and Guardiola seems to prefer Gabriel Jesus, who is younger and more able to carry out Pep’s intense pressing instructions.

A return to Atléti for the Argentine could be the ideal move for all parties. And what a front pair he and Costa would make.

Thus begins one of the many transfer carousels we will see this summer.
