Sol Campbell could finally be getting his first ever managerial position that he has so openly sought for years, as League Two strugglers Grimsby Town look for a new manager.
Grimsby have stated that they are open to discussing the vacant role with Campbell, who fancies himself as a manager, but has not managed to secure a job since retiring as a player.
The former England international said he would “definitely” be interested in the job and when asked whether their league position would prove to be a deal breaker, he replied, “Definitely not. I come from a hard background.”
Grimsby are currently 20th in League Two and sacked manager Russell Slade on February 11th.
The links to Campbell come after his outburst, in which he described himself as “one of football’s greatest minds.”
One of the most modest, too.
Campbell recently went for the Oxford United job, but they rejected him and it’s safe to say the former Arsenal player did not take it well:
“I can’t believe some people, I’m one of the greatest minds in football and I’m being wasted because of a lack of experience or ‘maybe he talks his mind too much.’
“Go to Germany, they love people who speak their minds. They got the jobs.
“I’m sorry that I’ve got a mind, but don’t be scared of that.
“That should be something you want at your club, but obviously not.”
Campbell seems to have a victim complex when it comes to his failure to secure managerial positions. While there is a huge issue with the lack of diversity in football management, in Campbell’s case, his deep flaws as a human are more likely to be the root cause.
