A supporter claimed that Sunderland boss Lee Johnson made a gesture towards fans after their game on Saturday
Sunderland boss Lee Johnson was criticised by fans after appearing to make a gesture to a supporter following his side’s 1-1 draw at home to Oxford United on Saturday.
As reported by the Sunderland Echo, the incident occurred at full-time after Sunderland were held to a stalemate at the Stadium of Light.
The result was a frustrating one for those present as the Wearsiders sit fifth in the League One table – two points behind top spot, but for one fan, he wasn’t impressed and was alleged to have made a comment towards Johnson.
Incensed by what was said, Johnson was accused by supporters who witnessed the altercation of waving his hand towards the fan, before walking off.
And the fan who Johnson allegedly directed the gesture towards rang into BBC Radio Newcastle to provide his account of what happened.
“A lot of people have seen it [the incident with Johnson],” he explained.
“It is disgusting. It is embarrassing and I’m angry, really really angry.
“I’m just raging. Absolutely raging.
“He turned around and put his two fingers up. Well, you know by the calls you are getting. It is disgusting. Absolutely disgusting.
“There was no bad language used on my behalf, so I don’t expect it from the manager of my club.”
As shown by the footage, it is unclear what gesture the 40-year-old made to the supporter but many seemed to be in disagreement with the accounts made by the angered supporter.

One supporter tweeted: “Totally ridiculous the outcry. Behind me they were chanting his name during the game.”
Meanwhile another fan backed Johnson and can’t understand why supporters have given the Sunderland boss criticism.
He said: “Fair play to Johnson. We in a brilliant position. Yes a few poor defensive decisions is costing us that killer instinct. Some fans just need to get a grip. Let’s not forget the Chris Coleman incident.”
