Could Kompany return to the Premier League?

Vincent Kompany has emerged as one of the names under consideration to become the next manager of Premier League strugglers Burnley.

The former Manchester City defender – who is currently in charge of Belgian side Anderlecht – is on a shortlist of names devised by the Clarets to replace Sean Dyche.

According to the Telegraph, Burnley’s chairman Alan Pace has looked at a host of names which also include Derby County boss Wayne Rooney, Chris Wilder and former Sheffield Wednesday and current Braga manager Carlos Carvalhal.

Kompany was first appointed by Anderlecht back in 2020 and has so far led them to one third-place finish and are in the same position this year, competing in the Belgian league’s play-offs to decide the winner of the title.

Michael Jackson is currently in charge on a caretaker basis

While Burnley try to find a successor to Dyche, the Clarets have embarked on a resurgence in form under caretaker boss Michael Jackson.

Jackson, who usually takes charge of the Under-23s squad, has overseen a run of seven points from three games and could even help take the Clarets five points clear of the relegation zone with a win against Watford on Saturday.

The caretaker manager, who is also being assisted by club captain Ben Mee, has said he has spoken to the chairman, and the pair agreed to take it “one game at a time.”

“[I’ve] had regular contact with the chairman,” he said.

“It’s going to go one game at a time, it’s best to do it the way we’ve been doing. We think we’re in a good place and it suits what we’re doing at this moment.”

Burnley are locked in a battle with Everton to avoid the final relegation spot – with Watford and Norwich City both seemingly already gone – and know that while they currently sit in 17th place, Frank Lampard’s side have a game in hand on them and could leapfrog them with a win.
