The Turkish Cup semi-final second leg between Beskitas and Fenerbahce had to be abandoned on Thursday when Senol Gunes, the Besiktas manager, was hit in the head by an object thrown from the crowd.

Pepe, the former Real Madrid defender, had been sent off for Besiktas after half an hour of the game which had already been delayed for five minutes during the first half after members of the crowd had thrown objects at the Besiktas players.

Gunes was struck as the game approached the hour mark and was seen falling to the ground holding his head. The incident took place during a row between Fenerbahce fans and some of the Besiktas players that had been on the bench and the 65-year-old had to be taken from the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium to hospital for treatment.

Besiktas’ players left the pitch after the incident, with the match referee deciding to call the game off. It had been goalless at the time, following a 2-2 draw in the first leg.
