An impressive showing

Unless you’ve been under a rock for a good few weeks, you’ll be well aware that things haven’t been going too smoothly for Paul Pogba.

Having been dropped on a number of occasions by Jose Mourinho, rumours continue to swirl that the midfielder has fallen out with his manager – despite the seemingly friendly exchange between the pair following United’s victory over Liverpool earlier this month.

Although Pogba’s performances have undoubtedly been below par in recent weeks, his showing for his national side on Tuesday night offered glimpses of what he is capable of.

Facing World Cup hosts Russia in Saint Petersburg, Pogba was deployed on the left side of a midfield three – a position he played in regularly during his time at Juventus.

From there, he was able to slide an inch-perfect pass to Kylian Mbappe to score the opening goal of the game shortly before half-time.

Following this, Pogba doubled France’s lead early in the second half, courtesy of a brilliant free-kick.

Pogba marked his goal by revealing a message, scrawled on a vest beneath his match shirt, wishing his late father a happy birthday. Fassou Antoine died at the age of 79 last May following a short illness.
