Arsene Wenger warns Tottenham may have to sell Harry Kane

Simon Lloyd

Arsene Wenger’s final game as Arsenal manager takes place at Huddersfield on Sunday.

The 68-year-old announced last month that he’d be stepping down from his role after 22 years at the helm.

Aside from guiding Arsenal to three Premier League titles and seven FA Cup wins, one of his greatest achievements while at the club has been to keep them competitive during their move from Highbury to The Emirates. The Gunners made the move in 2006, with the new stadium costing nearly £400m.

Tottenham, Arsenal’s north London rivals, are set to move into their newly constructed stadium next season – on the site of previous ground, White Hart Lane. Before they do, Wenger has warned it could have implications for Spurs’ transfer activity in the near future, suggesting they may even be forced to sell Harry Kane to help fund the new stadium.

“The prices for the stadiums have doubled but the transfers of the players have tripled or quadrupled,” he told reporters ahead of his side’s trip to west Yorkshire.

“A £10million player when we built the stadium [The Emirates] was huge.

“Today a guy like Kane, I don’t know for how much they can sell him. £100m? So they might get more supply.”

He even (jokingly, we presume) suggested they may even be forced to sell the England striker (or one of his teammates) to Arsenal.

“But they have to face it. Will they have to sell players? Even to Arsenal maybe!”

Ahead of the final round of Premier League fixtures this weekend it was confirmed that Spurs would be the highest-placed London club in the English top flight this season. This is the first time this has happened since 1995.

Arsenal are guaranteed to finish sixth, their hopes of an immediate return to the Champions League ended by a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-final last week.
