Forgotten ex-Arsenal striker makes surprise move to MLS

He'll need to work on his accent.

Just over eight years ago, a talented young Arsenal striker was building on some impressive loan form with two goals on his full debut for the club.

Jay Simpson would go on to score his first Premier League goal that season at the age of 20, scoring an equaliser for West Bromwich Albion against Hull during a loan spell with Tony Mowbray’s club.

But now, aged just 28, the Enfield-born striker is embarking on his second overseas spell after joining MLS outfit Philadelphia Union.

He might need to work on his Philly accent, though.

Simpson, who has previously spent time in Thailand with Buriram United, joins the Union from Leyton Orient.

He will link up in Philadelphia with Giliano Wijnaldum, brother of Liverpool’s Georginio, as well as United States international strikers Charlie Davies and CJ Sapong.

Those two goals on his full Arsenal debut – in a 3-0 victory over Wigan Athletic – were the only ones he scored in a Gunners shirt before he eventually moved permanently to Hull City and helped them win promotion to the Premier League in 2013.
