Former Arsenal star thinks the club’s lack of signings “cheats fans”

Tom Victor

Plenty of Arsenal fans have expressed their disappointment at the club’s lack of transfer activity, and former player Paul Merson shares their concern.

Merson, who won two league titles with the Gunners in 1989 and 1991, expressed his sympathy with those on the terraces after Arsene Wenger made no outfield signings during the transfer window.

Petr Cech was the only new arrival, while the club are believed to have passed on the opportunity to sign Edinson Cavani on deadline day.

And to add to the bad news for Arsenal, striker Danny Welbeck has been told he will need knee surgery, ruling him out for “a period of months”.

“It cheats the fans. The fans think ‘what are we coming for?” Merson told the Daily Star.

“We turn up every week, we pay the highest prices and what for? Top four? We might get a day out at Wembley again in the FA Cup. Wow-wee.”

Looks like he still thinks his old club are a ‘gillion miles’ away from the title.
