Former Man United youngster Angel Gomes gets goal and assist in Boavista win over Benfica

The attacker is on loan in Portugal from Ligue Un side Lille

Far be it from Manchester United to allow a promising youngster to leave the club, only to witness their value immediately skyrocket elsewhere, but it appears that this is exactly what is happening right now.

United allowed Angel Gomes, an attacking midfielder who had been touted for great things, to leave when his contract expired in the summer.

At the time, he issued emotional farewells to the club and to his former teammates, before joining Ligue Un side Lille on a free transfer. He was immediately loaned to Portuguese side Boavista, and has hit the ground running.

In four league appearances and 333 minutes his Boavista, Gomes has two goals and two assists, meaning that he has played a hand in an average of one goal every 84 minutes.

One of those goals and assists came in Sunday night’s win over league giants Benfica, a match which the home side won 3-0.

Gomes, who made 10 appearances for the United first team before leaving Old Trafford, won and converted a penalty to open the scoring for Boavista, before providing an assist for Alberth Elis for the second.

His performance and overall form since leaving United will no doubt leave some fans a bit puzzled and pissed off, especially at a time when his former side appear incapable of getting any sort of momentum at all.

It also brings to mind the case of another famous academy product who the club allowed to leave for free, the one and only Paul Pogba, who flourished at Juventus before being brought back for a ridiculous amount of money.

So worry not, United fans, you’ll be seeing Gomes back at Old Trafford in 2025 after he’s re-signed for a £200 million fee. Rejoice!
