Some jokes write themselves don’t they?
Gareth Bale said the word ‘trophies’ or ‘trophy’ seven times in his first interview with the in house media team at Tottenham following his sensational return to the club.
The Welshman made it clear what his intentions, and the club’s intentions are this season, with their last piece of silverware coming in 2008, when they won the League Cup under Juande Ramos.
All or Nothing viewers will have seen how desperate Jose Mourinho and Daniel Levy are to win a trophy, after Mauricio Pochettino spent years building the squad into challengers but never quite got them over the line.
“It’s nice to be back,” Bale said.
“Such a special club, it’s where I made my name. Hopefully now I can get some match fitness and help the team and hopefully win trophies.
“I feel like it’s a good fit, it’s a good time for me. I’m hungry, I’m motivated, I wanna do well for the team.”
Bale won the Champions League four times during his seven years at Real Madrid, scoring the winner in the 2014 final to bring ‘La Decima’ to the Santiago Bernabeu. He also won two LaLiga titles.

“By going to Madrid and winning trophies, I feel like I have that winning mentality.
“In those situations, in finals, knowing how to deal with the situation, the nerves, the pressure, that all goes with experience. Hopefully I can bring that to the dressing room, bring a bit more belief to everybody that we can win a trophy.
“I want to contribute to [the club’s progress] again and get us to the next level, which is winning a trophy.”
He’s saying all the right things, then. And Mourinho will undoubtedly love to hear it. Whether those trophies actually come is another matter, and watching Spurs labour past Plovdiv in the Europa League qualifiers on Thursday will not have inspired much hope among Spurs fans.
But with Bale back, and his ability to create something from nothing, which served them so well in the past, maybe a cup run is not out of the question.
