Pulled no punches.
Tottenham’s plans for the start of the Premier League season have been disrupted after Danny Rose said that he’s willing to leave the club, while adding that Spurs need to add a few ‘well-known players’ before the summer transfer window closes.
Last season was a frustrating one for the England international after he missed six months of the season due to a knee injury, but the former Leeds United left-back has frequently been linked with a move to Manchester United and Chelsea this summer.
In an explosive interview, Rose said that: “I am reaching my peak and have probably only got one big contract left in me. Time is running out and I do want to win trophies. I don’t want to play football for 15 years and not have one trophy or one medal. I will say this too, I will play up north. I don’t know exactly when but I will get back up north and play some football somewhere. I have been away for over 10 years now and I don’t get to see my mum that often. I’m not saying I want out, but if something came to me that was concrete, I’d have no qualms about voicing my opinions to anyone at the club.”
Regarding Tottenham’s lack of transfer activity, Rose said that the club should not be aiming to sign “players you have to Google and say, ‘Who’s that?’ I mean well-known players.”
Rose also claimed that he’s currently being underpaid by the club and is looking for a pay increase during his next contract negotiations – whether that’s with Spurs or another team remains to be seen.
“In any walk of life, if you think you are worth a certain amount, why on earth settle for less? I am not that person. I’m 28 next birthday and I don’t know how much longer I might have at this level. I’m not going to be stupid enough not to try and get the most out of it – medals, trophies and salary. Anyone who thinks I am moving primarily for money, that is not the case. I’m not speaking on behalf of other players but I know what I am worth,” he said.
Since the interview was released, Gary Neville has questioned Rose’s logic by airing his grievances with the club in public.
Tottenham get their season underway against Newcastle on Sunday.
