Alejandro Pozuelo angered the Belgian side’s supporters when leaving the club in March
Many fans don’t respond well to their favourite players exiting their club, but supporters of Belgian team Genk have reacted particularly badly to Alejandro Pozuelo moving to Canadian side Toronto FC.
The Spanish midfielder had become a vital player in a team that currently sit top of the Jupiler League table and committed his future to them just a couple of months ago. He later decided to leave for Major League Soccer and is said to have pushed hard for the move, at one point reportedly threatening a lawsuit against the club.
In the end, he got his wish and was due to appear in Sunday’s 3-3 draw at Zulte Waregem as a farewell appearance, although he instead travelled to Spain to spend time with his ill grandfather.
Genk fans made their discontent at the whole situation very evident with a display against Pozuelo from the stands.
A plastic doll with the player’s name and number on the shirt was hung by a noose for a number of minutes. A cardboard train then appeared on rails and pretended to run it over, before stewards eventually took the display down.
Genk are yet to respond to the incident.
