‘In short, I b@llsed it up’
Geoff Shreeves has apologised for misinterpreting Alexandre Lacazette’s comments during a post-match interview on Sunday.
Lacazette had scored Arsenal’s opening goal in their 2-0 win over Everton at The Emirates and was speaking to Shreeves in front of the Sky Sports cameras after the game.
Shreeves asked the French striker whether he and his teammates had Petr Cech to thank for the role he’d played in the victory – the veteran goalkeeper pulling off a string of impressive saves to keep Arsenal’s first clean sheet of the season.
“A big thanks to Petr Cech because he took a lot of balls today and we won our first clean sheet,” the former Lyon forward responded.
At this point, Shreeves interrupted, saying: “Steady with the language. I know English isn’t your first. Be careful with the language.”

In a tweet posted later, Shreeves acknowledged he hadn’t clearly heard or understood what Lacazette had actually said.

Lacazette’s goal was swiftly followed by a controversial second from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabonese striker fired past Jordan Pickford despite being in an offside position when the ball was played to him.
Lacazette earned a place in Garth Crooks’ team of the week for his performance, although he was criticised for the celebration he marked his goal with.
