Commentator’s curse.

As qualification for the World Cup enters its final stages, England are looking to pick up a valuable three points at home to Slovakia that would see Gareth Southgate’s side consolidate their position at the top of Group F.

Well, things haven’t gone go according to plan in the first half at Wembley.

After Marcus Rashford was caught in possession, the visitors capitalised and took an early lead.

Stanislav Lobotka played a neat one-two with Adam Nemec before he fired the ball past Joe Hart after three minutes.

England struck back on 37 minutes after Eric Dier did brilliantly to convert Marcus Rashford’s low corner with an expertly taken half-volley.

Since scoring, Ryan Bertrand and Marcus Rashford have gone close to giving England the lead.

As is the norm before every match, the pundits said that England needed to make a fast start and chase the early goal, well, Glenn Hoddle’s comments definitely backfired.

The former England manager said that he really “liked the look of this side and reckon there’ll be a real fast start by England.”

Moments later, the visitors broke the deadlock.

As things currently stand at half-time, England are still two points clear of Slovakia at the top of the table and four clear of Scotland and Slovenia respectively.

Hoddle will be very happy that Spurs favourite Dier spared his blushes.
