He’s changed his tune since England beat Germany
Graeme Souness believes England will go all the way and win Euro 2020, saying ‘the stars have aligned beautifully’ for Gareth Southgate’s team.
This comes just two weeks after England played out a drab 0-0 draw with Souness’ native Scotland, after which he asserted that “Football’s not coming home with that team.”
Speaking on ITV’s pre-match coverage of Spain vs Switzerland, Souness said: “I think they’re going to win it. I think the stars have aligned beautifully.
“Seven games, six of them at home… You can look at this one coming up against Ukraine, obviously favourites. That doesn’t mean to say they’re going to get through, I think they will.”
Assuming England can beat Ukraine and whichever of Denmark or Czech Republic in the semi-final, Souness suggested the home advantage of playing the final at Wembley would be a huge factor for England.
“No matter who they play, [it’s] at Wembley, at home, with the majority of the crowd, with the momentum, I see them winning it,” he said.
“I think they’re going to win it. I think the stars have aligned beautifully… my son goes to the games with his England shirt on singing ‘Football’s Coming Home’ – it’s hard at home at the moment!” 😆

Many fans on social media were keen to point out that Souness has changed his tune massively since his comments after the 0-0 draw with Scotland, but is that not… good?
England fans were all extremely pessimistic about the team’s chances of winning the tournament after that game, myself included, which Souness correctly points out in the video above.
Now, we’re favourites. If anything, Souness should be commended for his humility in this prediction – it can’t have been easy for him to say.
