It was a painful watch for some Sunderland fans
Hull City celebrated their promotion to the Championship in style on Saturday. First, the club’s official Twitter account put out a brilliantly funny dig at the short-lived debacle that was the Super League.
After their 2-1 win over Lincoln that secured their return to the second tier, Hull City tweeted: “Hull City can confirm that it has formally begun the procedures to withdraw from Sky Bet League One and join 23 clubs in a new competition, the Sky Bet Championship.”

Then the celebrations began, with the headline event coming later in the evening, when the beers were flowing and the guitar was out.
Hull’s account posted videos of the squad singing iconic, of overplayed, bangers Mr Brightside and Wonderwall, but the best and most wholesome video of the evening came when George Honeyman took centre-stage.
The former Sunderland man strutted around the team’s circle, doing his best Freddie Mercury impression as the squad sang I Want To Break Free by Queen.
Honeyman might have a future career in fronting a Queen tribute band, if neither coaching or media appeal to him.

The reaction was mostly Hull fans savouring every moment of joy from the momentous day in the club’s history. But of course it did attract some negativity, mostly from Sunderland fans who are understandably still disappointed that their club sold Honeyman to Hull.
Sunderland will almost certainly miss out on the automatic promotion places now, with second placed Peterborough nine points ahead of them with three games to go. Barring a collapse from the Posh and some mad score-lines, Sunderland will have to endure the play-offs.
