Iain Dowie reckons nobody sang the Will Grigg song at Euro 2016

How the hell?

Ben Kenyon

Was Iain Dowie at the same Euros as everyone else?

All anybody heard at Euro 2016 was that feckin’ Will Grigg song.

If you watched any of the European Championships at all, the words will no doubt be indelibly etched in your mind. But in case you’ve forgotten, it goes something like ‘Will Grigg’s on fire, your defence is terrified’ etc, etc, to the tune of ‘Freed from Desire’.

What started as a chant for the Northern Irish striker during a successful season at League One Wigan Athletic (or, you know maybe somewhere else) turned into an international phenomenon as his national side made the finals for the first time.

They were singing it in the streets, at the airports, on the terraces.

Then Germans and other nations’ fans started joining in before English fans nicked it and gave it a little Jamie Vardy twist. Even Eric Cantona was singing the sodding thing.

It was bloody everywhere.

But it turns out there was one man who was immune to this all-pervasive chant.

That man is Iain Dowie – and we’re as puzzled as you. The former Crystal Palace man dropped the bombshell while commentating on Wigan’s cup match away at North West neighbours Oldham.

Will Grigg was playing – and by all accounts, very much still on fire.

He netted himself a 34th minute goal which inevitably had the Latics fans howling the famous chant, to which Dowie said…

Still, it didn’t bother the Wigan fans much. They were just delighted to see Grigg back banging in the goals after not being given any game time to show his stuff for Northern Ireland in France…even if they did lose 2-1…
