Ian Wright criticises Gareth Southgate for England selection policy

Ian Wright has criticised Gareth Southgate’s England selection policy after a number of in-form stars were overlooked, with the former Arsenal man claiming that ‘certain players are guaranteed spots’.

Southgate named his latest Three Lions squad on Thursday ahead of this month’s World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino.

Manchester United duo Jadon Sancho and Jesse Lingard were both dropped from the squad, whilst Marcus Rashford and Jude Bellingham were selected.

Despite having picked a strong squad, the England manager has been criticised for leaving out multiple in-from players, such as Jarrod Bowen, Conor Gallagher, Aaron Cresswell, Ben White and Fikayo Tomori.

Instead, the former Middlesbrough boss has opted for a number of players who are arguably out-of-form, with Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Harry Maguire, Tyrone Mings and James Ward-Prowse all receiving call-ups.

Wright – who won 33 England caps and scored nine goals – took to social media to express his frustration at Southgate’s selections, suggesting that those who thought they may have been in with a chance of a call-up will be ‘gutted’.

He was also staggered that Tomori – who joined AC Milan from Chelsea in the summer – had lost his spot from the October squad.

The Match of the Day pundit tweeted: “I’ve been there where form is ignored and certain players are guaranteed spots!!

“It’s hard to take because there is nothing you can do. I don’t know what Tomori needs to do to get in and get a chance.

“Cresswell, Bowen, White, Gallagher will all be gutted.”

The Three Lions currently sit top of Group I, having won six and drawn two of their eight matches.

Southgate’s men face a difficult game against Albania on 12 November, before travelling to San Marino on 15 November.
