The chances of Raheem Sterling leaving Liverpool this summer appear to have increased after the 20-year old turned down a new contract believed to be worth £100,000 a week.
Sterling’s current contract with Liverpool doesn’t expire until 2017, but the club have been keen to tie him down to quell speculation surrounding his future, who has been linked with a host of clubs of late.
In an interview with the BBC, Sterling confirmed that he had turned down the lucrative contract offer from Liverpool and claimed that money is not the main motivating factor in his career.
“It’s not about the money at all,” Sterling said.
“It’s never been about money. I talk about winning trophies throughout my career. That’s all I talk about.
“I don’t talk about how many cars I’m going to drive, how many houses I’ve got. I just purely want to be the best I can be.”
Sterling’s refusal to sign the contract will come as blow to Liverpool fans, who will be further galled by Sterling’s revelation that he would have signed a less lucrative contract during Liverpool’s title bid last season.
“If, at that point in time, I was offered a contract, I most definitely would have signed straight away, probably for far less money than being said now,” Sterling added.
“I just think the timing was a bit off.”
