‘This isn’t funny’
Republic of Ireland football fans were angered during ITV’s coverage on Thursday night’s clash with England at Wembley, as the broadcaster managed to accidentally include the wrong subtitles during the national anthem.
As Amhran na bhFiann played ahead of the 8pm kick-off, the words to Ireland’s Call – an anthem associated with Irish rugby – appeared on screen, a point swiftly noted by Irish viewers.
Very quickly, the mistake had been shared high and wide on Twitter, with many asking how the mistake could have occurred.
‘Ireland’s Call is NOT our national anthem,’ read one tweet.
‘This is 10 times worse than claiming athletes, this is spitting in our face,’ read another.
Here @ITV the Irish anthem that is playing is Amhrán na bhFiann…why are the subtitles to Ireland’s call?! pic.twitter.com/maDvRIaKL0

Don’t know what’s worse Matt Doherty getting man of the match after us conceding 3 goals or ITV running Ireland’s call subtitles during Amhrán na bhFiann

Irish fans probably weren’t feeling much better after the game, either. England strolled to a comfortable 3-0 victory, with goals from Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho effectively ending the contest before half-time.
After the interval, Dominic Calvert-Lewin completed the scoring with an emphatically dispatched penalty.
