Why Jack Grealish opted to play in pair of worn out boots in play-off final

They are properly worn out

Jack Grealish has explained why he has played a large portion of the Championship in the mankiest pair of boots you’ve ever seen while speaking to Sky Sports after Aston Villa’s play-off final victory over Derby County.

Dean Smith’s side defeated Frank Lampard’s young Derby team 2-1 at Wembley, with goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn either side of half-time enough to keep Derby at bay despite a late Martin Waghorn strike.

After the game, Villa talisman Jack Grealish and their player of the year McGinn were speaking to Sky Sports host Scott Minto and pundit and Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, when the Villa captain was asked about his rather interesting boots.

“Well I’ve come back from injury (in February) and, obviously, these were like this (in good condition) – they were brand new – I got a few goals and a few assists and I thought ‘these are my lucky boots’ so I had to keep them,” said Grealish.

Why’ll the boots look to have significantly less foot protection than your average modern boot – especially for a player of Grealish’s type – they clearly haven’t affected his level of performance this season.

But with Villa now a Premier League side again, it’ll be interesting to see if he keeps them on come August.
