Jack Wilshere earned plenty of praise for his performance in his first start for Arsenal in 493 days.
Having spent last season on loan at Bournemouth, Wilshere has returned to the fold for Arsene Wenger and was named in the starting XI for the Gunners’ 1-0 victory over Doncaster in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
There were flashes of a young Wilshere during the game, as the midfielder displayed the kind of tenacity and passion that seemed to have drifted out of his game in recent years.

Per Mertesacker praised his teammate’s bravery in returning to fight for a place at the Emirates, while the German claimed that we saw “vintage Jack” in the game.
But not everybody is of the opinion that Wilshere is well on his way to returning to the days when he was pegged for greatness by the likes of Barcelona legend Xavi.
Wilshere’s former Arsenal teammate Wojciech Szczesny took to Instagram to troll the 25-year-old on Thursday night, after Wilshere posted a throwback photograph of himself to Instagram.
“Was that when you were still good at football?” the Polish goalkeeper asked.
It didn’t take long for Wilshere to respond to the brutal trolling from Szczesny, who is at Juventus nowadays, and his comeback was similarly savage.
Wilshere mocked Szczesny for throwing “the Carling Cup away from us”, a reference to the 2011 League Cup final when a miscommunication between the goalkeeper and defender Laurent Koscielny gifted Birmingham City a late winner.
Let’s call that 1-1.
