Jamie Carragher admits he doesn’t want Everton to be relegated

‘If we miss out on these two games next season, I’d be devastated’

Jamie Carragher has admitted that he hopes Everton stay in the Premier League ahead of the Merseyside derby against Liverpool.

The Toffees travel to Anfield on Sunday afternoon hoping to upset the Reds’ Premier League title charge, and boost their chances of survival.

Everton have only won once at Liverpool since the turn of the century, which came last season – behind-closed-doors – as they secured a 2-0 win.

Toffees’ terrible season

However, this campaign has been one to forget for Everton, who sit just one point ahead of 18th-placed Burnley with a game in hand.

Frank Lampard’s side have won just eight games all season and have not won an away Premier League match since August.

Speaking about Everton’s underwhelming season and the prospect of relegation, Liverpool legend – and former Everton supporter – Carragher claimed he would be ‘devastated’ if the Toffees were relegated this season.

“The thing that you speak to a lot of Liverpudlians about right now and Everton about in the city is ‘do Liverpool actually want Everton to go down?'” he said on Sky Sports.

“Now of course a lot of them would, it’s a massive rivalry, Everton wouldn’t want Liverpool to go and win the title or European cup, but if you ask me, and I think a lot of Liverpudlians, you don’t want Everton to go down.

“For me, as a kid, as a player for Liverpool and now the job I do now, this for me is the biggest day, I know it was Manchester United in midweek, for me, being a local boy, it was the derby.

“If you said to me that we would miss out on these two games next season, I’d be absolutely devastated.”

Crucial clash at Anfield

Jurgen Klopp’s side will be hoping to close the gap on Manchester City at the top of the table, while Everton will look to cause an upset at Anfield and increase their lead over Burnley.
