You can’t please everybody.

When it comes to Team of the Season selections, no pundit’s choices are more anticipated than those of Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville.

On Monday Night Football, the Sky Sports double act had their say on who most impressed them over the past eight months and, as was to be expected, supporters were ready to level the “you don’t know what you’re talking about!” accusation at the pair.

Both Carragher and Neville will have been prepared for the abuse, particularly over the more contentious decisions such as the fact that neither man picked the Premier League’s top scorer, Romelu Lukaku, up front.

Lukaku has 24 goals to his name all season and was named in the PFA Team of the Year last month but he didn’t make the cut for Carragher or Neville.

On Tuesday morning, Carragher took to Twitter to field some questions about his team and defend his picks.

And his defence of selecting Harry Kane over Lukaku proves just why Liverpool fans love him so very much.

Of course, Carragher was *slightly* joking and he followed up his original answer with a more reasoned explanation.

All jokes aside, Carragher clearly respects Lukaku as a player, having been given the runaround by the Everton powerhouse recently.

But Carragher’s argument makes sense as Kane was missing for a large portion of the season but has scored just two fewer goals than Lukaku.

Below is the side selected by the Reds legend and he can’t really be accused of bias as he didn’t include any players from his former side.

And for the naming of the manager of the hypothetical XI, Carragher reserved his best comment.
