Ragnar Klavan proved to be an unlikely hero for Liverpool at Turf Moor on New Year’s Day.
Sadio Mane had given Jürgen Klopp’s men the lead after the hour mark, only for Burnley to equalise with two minutes to play through Johan Gudmundsson.
That had appeared to be the final goal of the game until Liverpool won a free-kick deep in stoppage time. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain took it, finding Dejan Lovren who nodded the ball down to Klavan, allowing the Estonian to head home at the far post.
It was enough to win all three points for Liverpool, moving them level on points (for the time being at least) with Manchester United.
At the time of Klavan’s goal, United were preparing for their game at Everton. Also at Goodison Park was Jamie Carragher, preparing to cover the game for Sky Sports. As he revealed on Twitter shortly after the full-time whistle had sounded at Turf Moor, the timing of Liverpool’s winner couldn’t have been more perfect for him…
United and Everton are, of course, Liverpool’s two greatest rivals. With this in mind, you can appreciate why Carragher described walking through both sets of fans at the precise moment he learned of Klavan’s goal as ‘simply lovely’…
Everton v Man Utd for me from 5:15! As I was walking to the commentary box I had to go through Everton & United fans just as the Klavan goal flashed up on screen!!!! Simply lovely!!!!!!
