‘I didn’t like his behaviour when the penalties were being taken’
Jamie Redknapp has criticised Chelsea substitute Kepa Arrizabalaga for his behaviour during the Blues’ penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
Liverpool secured the victory thanks to an 11-10 triumph in the shootout, with all of the outfield players scoring their spot-kicks – which forced the two goalkeepers to take a penalty.
Edouard Mendy was replaced by Kepa in the final stages of extra-time – in the same competition and stadium in which he refused to leave the field of play against Manchester City in 2019.
Kepa, who refused to be substituted under Maurizio Sarri, with Willy Caballero ready to come on, was once again on the losing side as he missed the decisive penalty to hand Liverpool the trophy.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, former Reds midfielder Redknapp slammed the Spaniard for his behaviour during the shootout, in which the shot-stopper attempted to waste time on a number of occasions, and criticised the decision to send him on.
“I hope it puts to bed these substitutions now of putting goalkeepers on, Edouard Mendy is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and you bring on Kepa instead of him, ridiculous,” he said.
“I didn’t like his behaviour while the penalties were being taken, and then he took one of the worst penalties we’ve ever seen.
“I don’t like it, I didn’t understand why you do it, you’ve got one of best goalkeepers in the world and he should’ve stayed in there in the first place.”
