John Terry among frontrunners for vacant Derby County job

Terry is currently an assistant to Dean Smith at Aston Villa

John Terry is among the frontrunners for the vacant Derby County job, according to Sky Sports, as the club’s prospective new owners draw up a list of candidates.

The Championship club, who currently sit bottom of the division with just one win from their opening 14 games, sacked former manager Phillip Cocu last month.

While it’s understood that Wayne Rooney, who plays for the Rams, is keen to take the job having filled in on an interim basis since Cocu’s sacking, Terry is believed to be favoured by the potential new owner.

Sheik Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan, a cousin of Man City owner Sheikh Mansour, has been linked with a takeover at Pride Park and is interested in convincing Terry to leave Villa Park and drop down a division for his first role as a head coach.

Terry has been Villa assistant since 2018 and was part of Dean Smith’s set up which gained promotion in 2018/19, before securing their Premier League status last season.

This season, Villa sit comfortably in 10th after five wins and four defeats from their opening nine Premier League games.
