There’s a mixed response to rumours Jordan Henderson is set to be named England captain

24 hours on from the announcement of Sam Allardyce’s first England squad, attention has turned to who he will name as the national side’s captain.

Although reports earlier in the week had suggested Wayne Rooney would continue in the role, there is a growing sense that the Manchester United forward (midfielder?) may be replaced.

On Monday afternoon, rumours swirled that Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was in line to replace Rooney. At this point, let us stress that we have no idea where the rumours originated, but with Twitter being Twitter, it didn’t take long before the former Sunderland midfielder’s name was sitting pretty on trending list.

The suggestion that the 26-year-old, who has failed to hold down a place in the England starting XI in recent years, was set to be handed the armband came as a surprise to many.

With some giving credit to Allardyce for the decision…

Sam Allardyce’s first match in charge of the England team comes against Slovakia next Sunday, where the Three Lions begin their qualification campaign for the next World Cup in Russia.

England last faced Slovakia a matter of weeks ago in the group stages at Euro 2016. Despite dominating large spells of the game, the match ended goalless.
