The dreaded agent press statement
José Mourinho’s troubled tenure at Manchester United has officially entered the murkiest of murky waters with the news that his agent, Jorge Mendes, has issued a statement declaring that his client is still “fully committed” to the club.
Mourinho is winless in four games after Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford and as rumours swirl, it is hardly reassuring for the Portuguese that his agent must resort to the rather unusual step of reasserting that, yes, José would quite like to keep his job and, also yes, the club are very happy for him to do so.
“There have been more rumours of Jose Mourinho leaving Manchester United,” said Mendes, who also represents a number of players, including Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo.
“It’s totally untrue. José is very happy at the club and the club is very happy with him. He has a long-term contract with Manchester United and is fully committed to the club in building a solid winning project.”
Mourinho signed a contract extension with the club in January which will see him in charge until 2020.
Unless, of course, he is fired before then.
Which is, after Jorge Mendes’ involvement, looking more of a possibility than ever; whatever the ‘super-agent’ might have you believe.
