Australia now lead England 2-0 in the Ashes
Jos Buttler’s resilient innings came to an end when he trod on his own stumps as England fell to defeat against Australia in the second Ashes test.
The wicketkeeper batsman was dismissed after scoring 26 runs from 207 balls, with the Three Lions’ hopes of batting out for a draw essentially ending as Buttler stood on his own stumps when looking to steal a run.
Chasing a mammoth total, England were hoping to see the day out and mind a way to draw the second test, but with James Anderson and Stuart Broad at the crease, it didn’t take long for the hosts to take the wickets and secure victory.
Much like they did in the first test, Australia put on a huge total for the tourists to chase as they declared at 473 in their first innings following impressive innings from Marnus Labuschangne – who scored 103 – David Warner and Steve Smith.
England’s response saw them all out for 236 after another batting collapse, even with captain Joe Root and Dawid Malan once again putting on a brilliant partnership before the pair were cheaply dismissed.
Boasting a strong lead, Australia declared on 230-9 in their second innings and set England 468 to win the second test.

While it looked unlikely that the tourists would ever reach the total, they certainly had a realistic chance to drawing the test – especially when the game went into the final session of the last day.
However, when Buttler trod on his own stumps after an incredibly resilient innings, it took a matter of minutes for the home side to find the last wicket and take a 2-0 lead in the Ashes.
The third Ashes test begins on Christmas Day at 11:30pm (Boxing Day in Australia) with England already under immense pressure in the series – having to now win the remaining three tests in order to regain the urn.
