Having splashed out £3m on the defender, Jose Mourinho was forced into the decision due to a lack of ‘locally trained players’ in the Chelsea ranks. UEFA stated that a minimum of eight were required, forcing a rethink for the Chelsea boss.
The Senegalese international, brought in after Chelsea failed in their attempts to bring in Everton’s John Stones, will now have to watch on as new teammates such as Bertrand Traore and Kenedy make the cut instead of him.
