When Jose Mourinho’s night ended, his assistant Rui Faria stepped in to take charge at Old Trafford.
Unfortunately for the Manchester United faithful, Faria stepping up to the plate had zero bearing on the game as the Red Devils slumped to a goalless draw at home to Burnley.
Mourinho was sent to the stands at half time, shortly after voicing his disagreement with Mark Clattenburg’s decision not to award Matteo Darmian a penalty just before the first half ended.
United then lost another man in the second half, this time a player. Ander Herrera received a second yellow, although some argued that he slipped and tried to pull out of the second challenge midway through the half.
The referee, therefore wasn’t exactly in United’s good books after full time, but that didn’t stop Faria, who did the post-match media obligations in Mourinho’s absence, from praising the official.
“It is not important what Jose said, what is important is what the referee writes in his report.”
“I think the referee did fantastic work. I won’t say more than this.”
Maybe more than a hint of sarcasm in that sentence.
