Jurgen Klopp will be thoroughly proud of his team after they overcame a spirited Plymouth Argyle side in the FA Cup on Wednesday night. A 293-mile trip to Home Park definitely was not welcome at this congested time of the season. Liverpool’s XI were younger and less physically imposing than the home outfit, so a 1-0 win was more impressive than it looks on paper.
But credit to Plymouth for their admirable performance and enterprising play. They made it thoroughly difficult for their Premier League foes, and gave them a scare or two in the process. Both players and fans ensured that the atmosphere was prickly and ominous, as they looked to unnerve the far more celebrated opposition. Alas it didn’t result in a fairytale ending.
But conversely to the cauldron-like reception on the pitch, Plymouth were tremendous hosts to Klopp and his charges off it, and the very pinnacle of their genial hospitality was the awarding of a HUGE Ginsters pasty to the German coach following the final whistle. It was a prize fit for a king…except Klopp looked understandably befuddled by the delicious if unusual gift.
It didn’t help that he admitted to not eating carbs – which is something of an issue when confronting a giant pasty – but he appreciated the thought if nothing else…
