France and Portugal played out a 0-0 draw on Sunday night in a very even tie that saw most of the stats match the symmetry of the scoreline. Both teams had 10 shots, both had three on target, possession was split 49-51, with Portugal marginally edging the number of passes and passing accuracy numbers.
But there were no goals, so it wasn’t exactly the greatest Nations League game ever.
Fans still found a reason to gush over it though, and it wasn’t even a passage of play. No flick, trick or spectacular save could get fans as excited as Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappé having a little chinwag ahead of kick-off.
Ronaldo, 35 and Mbappé, 20, enjoyed a cheerful conversation in which Ronaldo appeared to be giving the World Cup winner advice, before pulling on his neck in the way that an annoying relative who thinks they’re closer to you than they are would do at a family gathering.

This sent fans into delirium. Real Madrid fans observed Mbappé’s lack of reaction as confirmation of Ronaldo’s GOAT status, as if they exchange wasn’t friendly anyway.

Mbappé then took his adoration for Cristiano to his socials after the game, tweeting ‘Idol, goat emoji, crown emoji’ nailing his colours to the Ronaldo mast in the Messi vs Ronaldo debate.
