League Two assistant referee runs the line in smart shoes

The English Football League is full of charming surprises, this Boxing Day we were treated to the sight of an assistant referee wearing school shoes

We’ve all forgotten our PE kit once in our lives

It’s not a fun experience. You get to school, you realise you’ve not brought your kit with you, and you spend the first three hours of the day dreading wearing some smelly, cobbled together kit from the lost property box. It’s embarrassing, it’s uncomfortable, nobody likes doing it, but needs must.

That happened in the EFL today, kind of.

In Tranmere’s home win over Morcambe, one of the assistant referees was seen wearing smart, black leather shoes while running the line. One can only assume he forgot to bring a pair of boots to run up and down the muddy pitch in, and that nobody had a spare pair in the right size.

So the poor guy has had to wear smart shoes. You can only imagine the state of his feet now, presumably cut to pieces. They won’t have offered much grip, either, adding to the already huge difficulty of arbitrating on split second decisions.

The home fans won’t have any complaints though, as they won 3-1.
