Leeds United set to sign Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla

Leeds United are reportedly set to sign Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla, who has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabeu

What a time to be a Leeds fan, eh?

Leeds United extended their lead on Norwich City at the top of the Championship table to five points last night with a 2-0 win over Derby, although Norwich can cut that lead to just two points should they beat West Brom this afternoon.

That win came after Marcelo Bielsa admitted to having sent someone so spy on Derby’s preparations at their training ground, a tactic that has been widely criticised throughout the media and by rival fans.

It seemed to work though, and that is all that will matter to Leeds fans, who are enjoying life with ‘El Loco’ at the helm and remain hopeful of returning to the Premier League, 15 years after being relegated in 2004.

Their promotion chances have just received a huge boost, too, as they look set to sign out of favour Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla.

A report from the Yorkshire post claims that Casilla is expected to arrive in England early next week to undergo a medical and will complete a permanent move from the European champions.

Leeds have been looking for a goalkeeper since November, when Chelsea loanee Jamal Blackman broke his leg in an under-23s match.

Bailey Peacock-Farrel has been Leeds’ no.1 for the majority of this season, but Casilla would presumably take his spot between the sticks once the deal is concluded.

Casilla, 32, has 18 months remaining on his Real Madrid contract, and Leeds are reportedly happy to buy him out of it after he fell to third choice at the Bernabeu due to the arrival of Thibaut Courtois in the summer.

Casilla developed as a youth player at Real Madrid’s academy, before leaving to join Catalan side Espanyol in 2008. After playing 115 LaLiga games for them, he returned in 2015 after Madrid sold similarly named but significantly more legendary keeper Iker Casillas to Porto.
