England won a penalty shoot-out the other night (you might have heard)
After coming agonisingly close to beating Colombia in normal time of their World Cup last-16 meeting in Moscow on Tuesday night, Gareth Southgate’s men had to go the distance as a stoppage time equaliser from Yerry Mina cancelled out Harry Kane’s penalty.
Although Jordan Henderson was the first player to fail from the penalty spot during the shoot-out, a combination of Mateus Uribe hitting the underside of the bar and Jordan Pickford saving brilliantly from Carlos Bacca allowed Eric Dier to send England through the quarter-finals with a 4-3 shoot-out victory.
Had Dier failed to convert his penalty, the shoot-out would have continued, and England would have been required to take at least one more spot-kick. As pointed out by a tweet from Adam Marshall, it was revealed on Wednesday’s edition of the Paddy Crerand show on MUTV that Jesse Lingard was next in line to take a penalty.
Interesting revelation during last night's Paddy Crerand Show on #MUTV that Jesse Lingard would have been England's sixth penalty-taker in the shoot-out against Colombia.

Lingard is one of three players to have scored for England during the tournament, scoring the third of six goals against Panama in the group stages. His Manchester United teammate Marcus Rashford had scored England’s second in the shoot-out.
Having beaten Colombia, England now face Sweden in the last eight with a chance to reach the semi-finals.
